I don't know about anyone else, but growing up there were certain things you just had to know: the very basics of cooking, which friends were really your friend, who the bad boys were ;) and basic car requirements like pumping gas, jumping the battery, changing the wipers and putting air in the tires. So I'm getting gas this evening (it's not a self-serve, there are none around my house) and this young kid comes up to the guy pumping my gas and is asking him if he can put air in his tire. I can't really hear the guy that pumps gas, but I hear the young guy ask again if can just put air in his tire. I thought the air hose wasn't working so I proceeded to tell him that if he goes down the road, there is another gas station and I know their air hose works. So the kid says no, the air works. It finally hits me that he doesn't know how to put air in his tires!! And then he starts giving shit to the guy pumping gas because he would not help him! Come on! How are you going to make it in the world kid if you can't even put air in a tire?!? The guy pumping gas didn't help him and even said to me that he just can't understand how people can't do such basic things for themselves.
Speaking of youth (nice segueway, huh?), I went out and got myself a Wii system with the Wii Fit. Yeah, I'm like a big kid but I. LOVE. IT. I like playing the games and even the Wii Fit games you don't feel like you're actually exercising, even though you are. Unless, of course, you do the running, then it does feel like exercise! When the Wii first came out with those commercials, I was a bit skeptical. Then I played it at a friend's house and thought it was such a genius idea! Let's be real. The younger generation are so sedentary: they sit in front on computer screens or they sit in front of TV screens. My 6 year old nephew probably is in front of a screen of some sort 85% of the time he is up. Part of it is that they don't have any kids on the block where they live and a part of it is my sis-in-law's fault because it's easier to just have him be on his own than planning some activity for him to do or do with him or even plan play dates. Bottom line, hats off to Nintendo, I think they really hit it out of the park with the Wii and hopefully it'll get the younger generation moving again.
BTW: IT'S FRAKKING FREEZING AGAIN! It's like 20 out and it's supposed to get down into the teens and only be a high of 26 tomorrow. OY VEY!
