~We're trying to raise awareness about this problem. They've killed so many people this is being called a genocide, and it has the potential to be worse than the most well known case of the Jews in Nazi Germany. All I'm asking is that people read this, become aware, and at least consider joining. The e-mail should explain the rest. Any other questions...just ask.
As for the coalition to help Sudan, I’m not really
sure how the structure is going to be but I doubt
we’ll be meeting two times per week. It’ll probably
be less often than that. Actually, I’m not really
sure how it’s going to go but I’m going to talk to
Andrew tomorrow. We’re going to exchange ideas and
decide how to organize the coalition and what to do
with it. We probably won’t have group meetings too
often. I don’t want to estimate at this point but I
doubt we’ll even be meeting once a week. And even if
we did meet that often, I don’t think we’d require
people to attend every meeting. We probably will do
an e-mail list and e-mail the members regularly. And
then when we do an activity, the members could choose
to show up or not.
But the thing is that there are only two members now.
So if you or anyone you know is interested in joining,
they’ll kind of be one of the “founding fathers,” if
you will. If we could get more people, they’d be able
to contribute ideas and be part of our decisions on
how the coalition will operate.
As for Sudan, you shouldn’t feel too bad for not
knowing about it. The American media don’t focus on
it too much. Occasionally there will be a blurb or
something, but nothing much. Sometimes there are
newspaper articles about it but you really have to go
out of your way. It’ll be in the “world events”
section and probably won’t be on the front page.
I’ll let you know more about the coalition as more
info comes up about it.
http://www.gng.org/sudan/darfur.html That article is somewhat dated (the casualty figures
have increased since it was written) but it briefly
summarizes what’s going on in Sudan. The U.S.
congress has defined it as a genocide and I think the
UN has as well. I might be wrong about this but I
think they’re targeting the Africans/Christians, while
a specific group of Arabs/Muslims control the
government and are orchestrating the violence. The
Janjaweed, which is backed by the government, is
causing all the violence. It’s really awful,
especially when you read the personal stories. I read
one in Time several months ago. Members of the
Janjaweed came into a village full of poor Africans
and everyone in the village was either killed or
raped. That’s the systematic process that’s been
going on for a few years and it’s led to hundreds of
thousands of deaths.
So these events are really somber but we’re doing what
we can to help.
