You guys,
sdwolfpup and I had THE COOLEST IDEA.
Check it out.
We've created what we're calling the Stranger in a Strange Fandom Project (
strangefandom). The idea is that people will volunteer to watch a few vids in a fandom they DON'T know, then write up a synopsis of what they think the show is about just based on what they saw. HOW FUN IS THAT. (Answer: OH SO MUCH, THX.)
This will be a really neat way to get people introduced to shows, get vidders/vids some great exposure, and have a really great time reading/discussing what will prove to be hilarious write-ups. And we've timed it to be kind of a countdown to VVC, giving those folks a great way to pass the time until then :-) (Yes, we've actually been sitting on this for months! OUR ASSES ARE TIRED.)
Here's how it will work: I'm going to make a post in *checks watch* twenty minutes asking for vid suggestions in any fandom you can fathom. The less popular, the better.
sdwolfpup and I will sift through them and put together a nice, long list of fandoms with 1-3 choice vids for each. We'll post the list and ask for people like YOU to sign-up. We'll then link you to the vids, and you'll have 2 weeks to watch them and write up a synopsis of the fandom (NOT a critique of the vids themselves). Whatever you can glean from the vids about the show. Plot, characters, who's a big homo, who eats steak for breakfast, whatever! ANYTHING. There's no length requirement; this isn't a strict assignment or anything. Considering you're not supposed to know anything about it, it should be pretty entertaining and 'out there'. That's the whole point! You'll then email it to we mods, and we'll post them all--keeping the authors anonymous--for everyone to read and discuss and enjoy. There's no shame in being wrong because no one will know it was you (well, except me and SDW, but we take bribes.) This isn't a contest or competition, it's purely to have fun. How much fun?
SO. MUCH. FUN.
So! Here's what you should do:
1) Join
strangefandom and add it to your flist. There's already lots of juicy info in the first post and community profile/bio. (And everyone compliment
sdwolfpup on her mad layout/icon graphic skillz!) And even if you don't play, it will still be fun to watch and won't clog your flist.
2) SPREAD THE WORD on your own lj. We're going to advertise to a vidding comm or two, but this will succeed best by word of mouth. The more people participate, the more fun we'll all have.
3) Start thinking of shows you haven't tried yet that you've been even mildly curious about. Mainstream stuff is fine. We'll have some of everything! Nobody's seen everything, so there will undoubtedly be at least one show on the list you haven't seen.
4) If you're a vidder, start thinking of what vids you'd want to submit and/or recommend!
5) Consider how much my friendship means to you. (Kidding. Maybe.)
I've never done anything like this before, and I'd really love to see it succeed, maybe even become a recurring thing :-) I really, really can't tell you how much it would mean to me if y'all participated in this. Even if you're not generally a fandom person. Especially if you're not a fandom person. Seriously, it's like, a 45 minute commitment over 2 weeks. And it's SO EASY and SO FUN. And I'll love you forever and ever. So, there.
