Special thanks to greensilver for putting up with this song ten million times, helping me steer through the angsty early stages, and making me fix it when it still wasn't quite done. I owe you. Hugs also to sdwolfpup, sweetestdrain, and fan_eunice for watching drafts and reassuring me this didn't suck.

So, I've had this vid in my head for a year and a half. It was one of my earliest "big vid" ideas. Finally seeing it onscreen? Fucking amazing. This was originally going to be my premiering vid at VVC next week. Then I saw absolutedestiny's "Rodeohead" last year, and it took the wind out of my sails. There was no way I was going to put my Firefly gen vid up there where it could be compared to his; that vid is unbelievable and perfect and made of sparkly shiny things that win. So, I was all insecure and cowardly and bummed and stuff, but I promised myself I'd make it someday. When I acquired Premiere in January, this was the first thing I put on a timeline to figure out the program. I got a minute done and stepped back and said, "...wow. That kind of sucks." and buried it in a folder of shame. I pulled it back out last Friday and saw it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered, yay! Thus began the vid farr that gave me a vid. Hooray!

I can say with absolute certainty that I will never again vid a piece of music that is so close to my heart. Not because I wouldn't want to, but because it isn't possible. I grew up with "Classical Gas"; it's a part of me. It's one of my father's favorite songs, and I have memories of hearing him play it on guitar or slamming his hands on the steering wheel to the crashes. It's easily one of my very favorite songs of all time and space, so vidding it was a bit intimidating. It was important to me to feel I did it justice. It also meant that I would really be vidding from my heart and gut more than my brain. I'm okay with that. Other than Jen, my amazing in-house InstaBeta, I didn't send away for beta on this vid. Maybe it shows; I'm okay with that, too. And I'm glad I got to use a tv show that is so close to my heart for this experience. You can't take the sky from me, damnit.

New things to my process/portfolio with this vid are vidding an instrumental and using zooms. OMG YAY ZOOMS. Getting to play with motion on a song with such intense musicality and intricacy was vidding heaven. When I first realized how viddable this song was, it was obvious to me that it was Firefly from the tone and instrumentation, but I didn't know what story I wanted to tell. I stalled for quite some time on it for that reason. First it was going to be about Serenity as the tenth character, then it was going to show how Simon and River boarding complicated everyone's lives. In the end, I let the music be my guide, and I decided on a good old rock 'em, sock 'em action vid that never stops moving because the shit never stops coming. Ironically, I ended up with a mixture of the earlier concepts, anyway.

I knew these things at the outset:

1) The Alliance would show up when the horns come in. That is what we like to call a "no-brainer." Those are nice.
2) The vid would be called "(Out of) Classical Gas" or "Out of (Classical) Gas" because I can't resist a good pun. And it would start and end with scenes from that episode.
3) That clip with Simon and the sliding door went *there*. No matter what.

Yeah, that was it. The rest was a crapshoot. I was also pretty firm on the notion that I didn't want to use the film unless I absolutely had to, and I'm glad it never came to that. I adore it, and aspect ratios don't scare me, I just wanted to use mostly clips I hadn't seen in other vids. Limited source is always a challenge, but it was important to me to make something that was purely Firefly. I wanted to find an angle of the show I hadn't seen before. Granted, I've barely seen more than a dozen Firefly vids, but I still think I achieved that goal, if only just for me and my own limited exposure.

So, here it is: the vid of my heart. I hope you like it. Comments are shiny and keep her in the air when she outta fall down. Thanks for watching.
