Correspondence

I have been very busy in writing to people recently.

Firstly, M. J. Hyland, a writer.

Dear Ms Hyland,

I'm sorry, I don't know your correct form of address.

I was recently introduced to your work, and very much enjoyed both How the Light Gets In and Carry Me Down.  I've yet to have the pleasure of reading This is How, but I very much look forward to it.

I was introduced to your work by my boyfriend, who was greatly affected by How the Light Gets In when he first read it, as a teenager.  Your book got him through some very difficult years, and I would like to thank you for that.

I do have a request; if I were to send you a copy of This is How, care of your publishers, with an SAE and return postage, would you be willing to sign the book with a dedication for my boyfriend and send it back?  It would be very much appreciated.

Yours in hope,
Kali Ravel

She wrote back to me the other day;

Hello Kali

It's so wonderful to read what you say. And yes, of course, you can send a copy of This is How to me c/o my literary agent, Deborah Rogers at Rogers Coleridge & White in London. If you have trouble finding this address, let me know.

I hope you like this, my latest book.

All very best,
Maria

My reply;

Hello Maria,

Thank you very much, that's very kind of you.

I don't get paid until the end of the month, but I'll let you know when I've sent the parcel.

Thank you again.

Kali

Moral of the story; writers are very nice if you go a bit gushy.  I've written to Steven Landsburg before, although I've lost my record of that. I've also got Alison Kervin on facebook.  One day, I shall write to Sheri Tepper.

I also wrote to nestle.  I've been vegetarian for three weeks, and I miss smarties.  :(  Their response wasn't very interesting though - they just sent me a link to nutritional information.  It's not even a direct link - I have to dig around for what I want to know.
