Sports and War

Just a couple of thoughts.

I think sports has, to some extent, replaced the need for war in Europe.  Particularly football.  It's like, we get our antagonism out that way.

Sports and war have had a few odd connections.  German soldiers played football with English soldiers at Christmas in 1914.  Germany hosted the 1936 olympics, which Hitler used to show off what he considered to be German superiority.  During the 1950 world cup, Egypt and Sudan refused to face Israel, while Indonesia would only play on neutral ground.  Then there's the Welsh song, Sosban Fach, usually associated with the Llanelli Scarlets (I know they've been renamed just 'Scarlets', but I like to be specific).  Here's a video;

Someone in the comments proposes a theory that it's about a soldier (little Dai, presumably) - what he leaves, and what he returns to.  Lyrics and translation here.
