Days 24-26: of things Christmassy ...

What's a special tradition in your family that makes the holiday season special to you?

We're not a great lot for traditions - just being together is special enough. My husband and I lived out of Australia for 12 years, so there were very many Christmases where we didn't make it home, and didn't really bother to celebrate.  When you've got kids, you do make an effort, but still - we're far from Christmas mad. It's all about time and good company for us.

This is the worst thing about being a grown up with a family of my own, actually - having to split Christmas between my inlaws and my family, who live some 1000 miles apart.  (And we live another 1000 miles to the south of that.)

I love the fact that my family isn't Christmas mad, and we believe in having a nice meal, and chilling out. (Always nice when its 34 degrees and 100 percent humidity ...) That sense of it just being the people you really love, your absolute nearest and dearest, is very special to me.  My family has always celebrated with just the immediate family - (my Dad's family was at the other end of Australia, and my Mum's was in Ireland.), so even though there are more of us now  thanks to our significant others and children, it's still just us, you know.  Christmases with my husband's family are fraught because there are lots of people, and I don't actually like all of them, and I feel on my best behaviour and sometimes I just want to lock myself in a room and escape ...
We're on a roll with the holiday stuff. So… what's your favorite holiday movie or TV episode?

There's TV at Christmas time?  Why?  Why bother watching TV when you've got family to talk to?  Never had a Christmas when the tv went on ...  oh - unless there's a cyclone coming. Then we watch for the warnings.  And on Boxing Day, my LEAST FAVOURITE thing about Christmas happens ... the cricket starts.  Cue beer and men slumped on the couch for days ...

It's officially one month till Christmas! Post your favorite holiday song.

Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun: Probably not what you are expecting.  But I have two blue eyed girls and was 9000 miles away from my family for many years, so there is so much truth in this song for me.  Always have a tear after listening to it.
