Well I am glad I haven’t got a ton of calls like everyone about the swine flu. There are 3 confirmed cases. They are all in quarantined along with 30 other people they were in contact with. I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. They haven’t said in the news the name of the Marines so everyone has been getting calls from family and friends trying to find out if they are one of them. I wonder if everyone will be watching the news from here now more often… Not sure if that will be a good thing or bad but guess I will find out.
Now time to the good part of my post. I am picked up onto a platoon that will go on ship around the world. One of the main reasons I wanted to join the military. I am going to be pushing my body and mind to the max till I am on ship.
Next week, we have a field op for 3 days. 2 weeks after, we got summer heat for 2 weeks. Another 2 weeks, Mojave viper for a month. Then after a week or two, another Mojave Viper for another month. And that will not be all the field ops we will have. We will leave for port in Jan. and leave 3 to 4 months after depending on how long the MUE before takes to get back.
My wife won’t be able to come out here for a good while but that is ok. I just hope she will be able to come out here before I leave. I main worry is if I get kicked off the platoon and end up going to a line company. If that happens I will go to Afghan with them in Oct. I don’t want to go there because at least on ship, I won’t be in harm’s way.
I met someone a few days ago that has done what I am planning to do and plan to talk to Uncle Dean about in a couple of years when I am close to getting out of the Marine Corps. I have found out that the Army will offer $80,000 if I stay as a Tanker and when you join up from the Marines; you get to discuss parts of your contract. I am going to look at getting into Ft. Hood. That way I can be closer to home. I like the Marine Corps but I can pay back my college loans, and be closer to home. I heard that the Army side of it is a lot less stressful. We could have a better life there closer to family.
