Sakura no mori no mankai no shita 「桜の森の満開の下」

Feb 13, 2010 19:13

It’s about one month too early to talk about sakura, but after reading this very short story by Sakaguchi Ango, I’m sure I will see the cherry blossoms in a different light from now on.

It would be a pity to spoil your reading pleasure by revealing too much of the plot, but, broadly speaking, it is about a man, a woman and a forest of cherry trees. There is also the underlying idea that the beauty of the sakura in full bloom can have a disturbing effect on its beholder.

Fortunately for us, Sakaguchi’s writing style is clear, so the story is easy to read, besides being captivating till the very end.
Nevertheless, its mystery will surely stay with you for while, because it seems to be one of those stories which are open to endless interpretations.

If you have already read it or if you will read it someday, I would really like to hear your opinions about it. I think it’s one of the best Japanese stories I have read so far.

yomiyasui, mystery, quick read
