Mamoru Oshii Criticizes Current State of 3D Films
Anime director Mamoru Oshii spoke as a guest speaker in the "Sharp Smartphone 3D Contest: CG Animaton Category" awards ceremony at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2011 event at Tokyo's Cinemart Shinjuku theater on Friday.
Oshii noted that it is more difficult to put together camera angles, camera movement, and cuts in 3D films compared to 2D. While Oshii praised the work of James Cameron's Avatar he commented that "of the various 3D movies that have opened, the only successful one in terms of technical direction currently is Avatar."
Oshii also expressed his puzzlement at the advancement of movies for smart phones. He commented that the small screens hinder the ability for detail but acknowledged that mobility allowed for convenience.
