Actress Saki Aibu, 25, who is one of the Japanese voice cast for a Chinese film commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the great Tangshan earthquake in China, said Tuesday’s earthquake in New Zealand brought back memories of her firsthand experience during the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake.
Aibu said, “The people in New Zealand are in my thoughts, and I hope all the victims will be recovered for the sake of their families. Japan experiences many earthquakes and once again, this has me thinking just how much people’s lives are affected by natural disasters.”
In the film, “Tozan Daijishin,” Aibu provides the voice for the main character, a survivor who struggles in the aftermath of the quake with her kid brother. Her character is traumatized when the children’s mother tells them she can only save her brother. “Looking at the family that was ripped apart by the earthquake in this film, I found myself thinking about what is really important in life,” Aibu said. “The main character is a strong woman. I wonder how I would fare in her situation.”
The film premieres in Japan on March 26.
