Once upon a time, there was a writer named John Scalzi, and he had a blog called the Whatever. One day, not too long ago (September 13, 2006, if you need the precise date), he posted a list of things he needed to do that day on the Whatever:
http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/004456.html Mr. Scalzi has more than a few people who read the Whatever, and as is usually the case, they left comments on this particular post. Most of those comments were related to item #9 on the list -- "Tape bacon to the cat." The people commenting thought that Mr. Scalzi was kidding, so he posted this followup entry:

Links from one site called Fark were responsible for 150% the average daily traffic, according to a post he made the following day. And that was just links from that site. As Mr. Scalzi put it, it was safe to say that his site had its busiest day ever on September 13, 2006. The incident is even mentioned in the entry for him on Wikipedia.
Now, John Scalzi won the John W. Campbell Award For Best New Writer in 2006. He has been nominated for the Hugo Award in both the Best Novel and Best Fan Writer categories. I think it is safe to say that he has managed to achieve some acclaim as a writer. But I think this incident can be best summarized by this motivational poster, which Mr. Scalzi created from the photo which seemed to catch everyone's eye:
