Just a quick note of how I got yelled at by a foursome of early 20-somethings tonight...
Here's the scenario: I saw a girl, who was yelling (and not in a happy-sounding way) being held tightly around the waist by one guy while two other guys walked alongside/behind them. They were moving kind of fast towards the elevators that go to the rooms in the hotel... and the elevators are located in a less-populated place at the convention.
So I asked: "What's going on here? Ma'am, are you with them willingly?" She ignored me and refused to answer. The guys said "Yes, she is." I said "I need to hear that from her..." while wearing my doom-face and coming closer to them - fast.
"Ma'am, are you with them willingly?" I said again.
She said "WHAT THE FUCK???!?!? YES! He's my Boyfriend! Duh!!!"
One of the flanking guys said "I see what you're trying to do..." while coming at me in what I could only assume was a threatening manner. He sure looked pissed off, so I backed off, saying that I was old-school con security (which is TRUE) and therefore I feel a need to watch out for things like that.
The whole group started cursing at me, like I was some moron who couldn't obviously tell that four strangers I'd never seen in my life were friendly with each other and willing to be hanging out together, despite what sounded like protests from the girl.
Everyone who witnessed it said I did the right thing. I know it was the right thing to do. (And I may or may not have made a new friend out of that... I'll have to see if I can find him tomorrow... Dave, I think he said his name was)
[EDIT] His name's actually Dan. [/EDIT]
My goal by confronting the group was to call attention to the scene, ideally from large, burly protector types (this is a con, where such people are easily locatable) as I doubt I could take three guys in a fight on my own, even if they were skinny little dudes.
And you know what? I'm going to keep doing this no matter how many times the girl gets pissed at me because she and her man were playing "rough" in public and I misinterpreted the situation because I don't know them.
Why? Because I'd rather piss off some random girl for five minutes (or maybe an evening if she's a grudge-holding type) than let someone get raped (or worse) without at least trying to stop it.
And I sincerely hope someone would do the same for me if I ever managed to get into a situation where I couldn't be a self-rescuing princess...
Be the change you want to see in the world. :-)
Other than this once incident, I am having a marvelous time. I missed conventions in the "off season".
