ok good.. I just talked to Peggy and they are preparing to evacuate. *sigh of relief* She said it is getting somewhat.. ummm don't know the word for it. A lot of the gas stations are out of gas, there are VERY long lines at the stations that still have gas, 7 hours to drive 45 miles on the interstate, all interstate lanes are now north bound

You're right... at least people are taking this serious as a result of Katrina. It's a difficult situation to evacuate - you are leaving your home, your belongings, your job, etc. Plus the expense of staying in a motel somewhere for days, eating meals out, etc.
Yes, Galveston was hit in September 1900. They called it Hurricane Galveston. Most of the city was underwater and the storm surge was tremendous and deadly. There were several thousands of deaths.
My great-great grandmother was in that hurricane. She was a young girl who was there helping her older sister with her newborn child. My grandmother ended up climbing on top of the 2 story house they lived in and hung onto the chimney. The water came up to her feet as she sat on the roof. Her sister and her sister's entire family was killed in the storm. The house is still actually there and I've seen it (and taken pictures of it). The family says that Grandma would never talk about the storm - it was too traumatic for her.
The reason why Galveston was so destroyed was for the same reasons that New Orleans was destroyed - it was below sea level and it had no type of sea wall built. When they rebuilt Galveston, they raised it up several feet and built a sea wall. However, the sea wall does not go completely around Galveston (on the waterfront side).
I have spent many times in Galveston and I love it there. I wouldn't mind living there, either. well, not right now ;) I imagine it's a total clusterf*ck in Houston right now with people trying to get out of there. (Houston is the 4th largest city in the USA)
New Orleans can only withstand approx 3" of rain right now. The ground is totally saturated and can't handle anymore. Under normal circumstances if you dig a couple of feet into the ground, you hit a lot of moisture or water puddles quickly form.... so it can't tolerate too much rain anyway!
I've been a nervous wreck about all of this and I'm praying that all of my friends have gone to safer grounds. I have a LOT of friends in Houston and this is making me nervous and scared for them.

Did all your relatives come through this ok? My aunt lives in College Station, she had to evacuate...but all is well, thank goodness:)
I hope you're alright. Sorry to see people have given you grief here...:( Sometimes, that's exactly why I take a hike. I may not get blasted in 'quite' the same way; (there are many ways to hurt someone;) but i've certainly found my share of shit to walk away from around here.
Dont let it get to you too much. Hang in there....stay posative!
My pc is down; i'm on a public computer, so i'm not sure when, but I will write. Meanwhile, if you want to write, blow off steam or whatever, feel free. I will not judge you on anything. Promise:)
