HTTYD poster review...no really

Our discussion board assignment for my graphic design class this week was to tell the class about some kind of graphic work(advertisement, poster ect....)that really impacted us. I've decided to share my response with you guys because I think I made a good point from a designer's point of view:

I think one design that has made an impression on me is Dreamworks' promotional poster for their 2010 film How to Train Your Dragon([link]). The colors are incredibly beautiful and simple at the same time and the characters on it are, even if you haven't seen the film, very sweet.

I think what impacted me the most about it were the very few images they used to create it. It really only has four main features(boy, dragon, moon and a starfield)besides the film name and credits but those four images just add to the fantastic feel. Of course the font used has a very strong feel to it, really striking and eyecatching although once you see the rest of the poster, it really isn't obtrusive. I think the design principles they used when making this poster were that they wanted to be able to catch a viewer's eye with the brightly colored and bold font and then draw them in with the images themselves.

All in all, I think Dreamworks did a great job in creating a welcoming promotional poster for their film. I know it's definitely one of my favorite movie posters and I was very glad to get a copy of it for my wall.'
