~..~

"Oh man...how am I gonna do this? Best case scenario she accepts-worst case scenario she hits me with something."

Hiccup sighed and leaned back next to the taller boy. "I know what you mean. Astrid's always hitting me with stuff."

"Not really helping," Fishlegs muttered.

"Sorry."

The two boys sat in silence for a while, watching Astrid and Ruffnut where the two girls sat some distance away, talking happily

and comparing axes.

"You know," Hiccup said suddenly. "There is a way we can find out if she likes you."

"How?"

"We ask Tuff. He's her brother so he should know."

"I dunno, Hiccup. Somehow I don't think she really shares much with him except bruises. Why don't you ask Astrid? She'll have to know...girls talk about pretty much anything."

Hiccup frowned. "You really want me to ask my violence-inclined girlfriend if Ruffnut likes you? Are you insane? She'll kill me."

"Why?"

"Because Astrid's like that. If I say I'm doing something for a friend she automatically assumes that I'm the 'friend'. Trust me,
I've had experience. Why don't you ask her?"

"Okay, I will."

~..~

"Hey, Astrid."

The blonde turned and smiled. "Hey, Fishlegs."

"Um...I have a question."

"Yeah?"

"Um...see I have this friend..."

"You."

"What?"

"Don't try the whole 'I have a friend' routine. I know you're just talking about yourself."

"Oh." The teen swallowed hard. "Doyouknowifruffnutlikesme?"

Astrid frowned. "What?"

"Do you know if Ruffnut likes me?" he repeated, slowing down to the speed of sound.

"Yeah she likes you."

"Really?!"

"Yeah why wouldn't she? She likes everyone...except Tuff of course."

"Oh. That's...not exactly what I meant."

"What? Oh...you meant does she 'like' like you."

The tall Viking nodded.

"I don't know, sorry. We don't exactly talk about boys."

"Oh. Well thanks anyway."

~..~

"You mean he actually asked you if I like him?"

"Yeah the poor guy was really torn up when I said I didn't know. So do you?"

"Do I what?"

"Like Fishlegs."

"Well yeah."

"You 'like' like him?"

"Of course. He's a genius and that's hot. Don't you agree?"

"Well sure. So are you going to tell him?"

"I dunno."

You should. I think he really likes you."

"You think so? Well okay then."

"Where are you going?"

"To ask a genius out on a date."

~..~

"Should I ask her or not? If I do and she doesn't feel the same way..."

"Son, would you please stop pacing! You're making me lose count."

"Sorry, Dad."

The tall blond Viking shook his head slowly and returned to his knitting. "Why don't you just go ask the girl instead of bothering me? Your mother will be back soon and I want to have these socks finished before she comes."

"But, Dad..."

"But nothing. Now go!"

The teen sighed and opened the door-to find Ruffnut standing on the other side. "Uh...hi?"

"Can I talk to you?"

"Um sure. Bye, Dad."

The older Viking merely waved one of his knitting needles at the door, keeping his eyes on the stitches in his hand.

Fishlegs closed the door and uneasily turned to look at Ruffnut. "Listen, I..."

"Do you want to take a walk?"

"Yeah...that'd be nice."

"I know the perfect spot. Come on."

Fishlegs yelped as Ruffnut dragged him through the village, drawing several stares. Once they were inside a clump of trees, the girl turned to regard Fishlegs seriously. "I was just talking to Astrid."

"Oh?" Fishlegs flushed slightly at the squeak that came from his mouth.

"She says that you asked her if she knew if I liked you."

He nodded nervously.

"Why didn't you come and ask me yourself?"

"Uh...I..."

"What, are you scared of me or something?"

"Yeah a little bit."

Ruffnut's eyebrows shot towards her hair. "Why in Odin's name would you be?"

"Well, because you...you're so good at beating up Tuffnut I was scared that you'd do the same to me if I asked."

"Idiot."

"What?"

"He's my brother, you idiot. Of course I beat him up. You don't see me beating up on Hiccup or Snotlout though, do you?"

"No, but..."

"Then what would make you think I'd beat you up for asking a simple question?"

"I...don't know."

Ruffnut sighed and folded her arms, watching Fishlegs seriously. "So?"

"Uh...so?"

"Are you gonna ask me or not?"

"Um...do you like me?"

"Yeah of course."

"Really? You don't just mean it in a friend sort of way-mmph!"

"Definitely not," the blonde girl said with a grin as she pulled back.

"I...uh...wow."

"So, do you want to go out sometime?"

"Uh...yeah. Yeah that'd be nice."

"Great! So I'll pick you up around suppertime tonight?"

"Sure..."

"See you then," Ruffnut said cheerfully, pressing another kiss to Fishlegs' stunned face before racing off.

"Wow," Fishlegs murmured, watching Ruffnut's long pigtails bouncing behind her as she ran. "So much better than reading."
