Title: Scribbles
Author:
janna_hawkins Summary: Toothless could barely remember the last time he had seen the teen smile.
Characters: Hiccup, Toothless
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to HTTYD except the first seven books, and a bunch of action figures
Author Notes: Inspired by a prompt by
alabaster_demon over at
train_dragon (Hiccup tries to draw like Toothless - grabbing a big long stick and running around in crazy, wiggly circles. Toothless is delighted at their shared artistic tastes) This ended up being a lot more serious than I expected but I still like it. Hope you do too! For
lost_laputian just because she's so awesome, writes amazing stuff and comments on every single fic I post here :D

Hiccup stood looking at the huge swirls in the dirt after the dragon had run off, still feeling those warm scales beneath his fingers. He walked back to where his sketch of the Night Fury was, careful not to step on any of the dragon's work; he didn't want to get growled at again. The Viking sat down on the stone and looked between his drawing and the dragon's. Who knew that something he had been taught to fear and hate would be so similar to himself.
He glanced at the sky and leapt to his feet as he realized how late it actually was. As he ran back to the village he made up his mind to help his new friend whatever the cost.

Toothless sadly watched Hiccup hobbling across the cove, his prosthetic leg sinking into the soft dirt with every step. The Viking had refused any help, declaring that he would either make it on his own or not at all. Hiccup was often like this following the battle with the giant dragon and the injury he had recieved during that battle. Toothless could barely remember the last time he had seen the teen smile.
Across the cove, Hiccup sat down heavily on a large rock, panting quietly and rubbing the place where his leg met metal. With a start, Toothless recognized the stone Hiccup was sitting on. He smiled slowly as he hurried to one of the smaller trees nearby and broke off a large branch. He was going to make his friend happy again if it was the last thing he did.
Hiccup looked up at the loud crack and watched in surprise as the Night Fury spun in circles, dragging part of a small tree behind him. The dragon stopped next to him and motioned for Hiccup to climb onto his back. The teen frowned but did as the dragon asked, taking hold of the branch offered to him.
Once he was certain that Hiccup was secured in the saddle, Toothless started to slowly move in circles, glancing back every little bit to watch Hiccup's face. The teen seemed to be struggling to hold the branch upright and the dragon was suddenly annoyed with himself. He should have known that Hiccup wouldn't be able to hold that heavy branch on his own. Stopping suddenly, Toothless reached back and took the branch from Hiccup's hands. He positioned it so both he and the young Viking could hold it and gave Hiccup a look.
The Viking smiled slightly and grabbed the branch as the dragon began to move again. They spun in slow circles and Hiccup's smile steadily grew wider as the swirls in the dirt grew larger. By the time the entire ground on the cove was covered in designs, the teen was laughing and shouting for the dragon to spin faster.
Regretfully stopping as he noticed the darkness steadily creeping into the cove, Toothless looked back at his human friend and grinned. The Viking smiled back and climbed down, carefully settling his feet onto the soft ground. He limped over to a patch of trees and picked up a long thin branch.
Toothless watched in amazement as Hiccup slowly shuffled around him, dragging the stick. The dragon smiled and picked up his own stick, following behind his laughing friend. This plan had worked even better than he had expected.
