habit forming

We tend to think of habits as active. Habits are things that we do, over and over, until it's hard to imagine doing anything else, but you know, I'm starting to realize that the reverse is also true: the longer you don't do something, the harder it is to start doing it again.

Laundry. Writing. Going to bed at a reasonable hour. Keeping one's parents up to date on one's activities ("Well, not that week, because I'll be in Nunavut." "What?" "Oh, or early July, because I'll be in Spain." "WHAT?"). Eating meals from plates. Yoga. (Seriously, it's been almost THREE YEARS.) Watching movies in pajamas. Reading books with chapters, instead of blogs with posts.

It applies to people, too. Just think about how hard it is to break up with your hairdresser. Or to make new friends as an adult. Or to have game-changing conversations with the people who count. Or to change the way you think about yourself.

You have to be brave to break a habit, and most times, most days, most of us aren't. But just imagine if we were--I, for one, would be eating pasta from the fanciest china with the brand-new posse I assembled at Rama Lotus.

You?
