Oh, lj, be my triptik!

In a week and a half, my mother and I will be driving from St. Louis to Providence. Due to family/friends, we'll be stopping overnight in Zanesville, OH, and Plainfield, NJ. We suspect that there's nowhere exciting to drop in on the way between these points, but we're optimistic! Are there roadside attractions? Caves? Outlet malls? Potteries ( Read more... )

Well, there's the Air Force Museum in Dayton, which I think is pretty spectacular. It helps to like airplanes.

Southwestern PA takes you near Fallingwater, which is nice.

There's the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle.

There's always little old me in Pittsburgh.

Columbus has the last wine-dispensing Trader Joe's before Pittsburgh. If you could pick me up some Three Buck Chunk Sauvignon Blanc, this would be much appreciated.

And yes, Zanesville does indeed have potteries.

That's Three Buck Chuck, not Three Buck Chunk. I'm guessing Kraft makes the latter article.

Ooh, Fallingwater - I would do that. And airplanes are cool, too.

I'll check with mom on how close our route comes to Pittsburgh - it would be fun to see you, but I'm not sure how much time it adds to what she has planned? It would probably be Sunday the 20th (assuming that the shop gets a new door put onto the Odyssey on schedule - she's selling it to J (who doesn't like road trips nearly as much as I do, hence the me-and-mom driving it out here), but she's trying to get it in reasonably good shape first).

Mmm, three-buck-chunk. I don't think I want to know what that is.

You should try to get here on Saturday. Blue Öyster Cult is playing.

Seriously, Fallingwater is about 30 minutes off the Donegal turnpike exit, I think, and well worth the detour. If you have extra time, visit nearby Kentuck Knob, another FLW house. Pittsburgh is an hour north of the 70-79 interchange at Washington, PA. Trader Joe's in Dublin, OH (suburb of Columbus and birthplace of Wendy's), about 20 minutes north of 70.

Also, there's this enticing advertisement along the PA Turnpike. I've never followed up on it, though...

And YES to this. I'm definitely sending mom that one.

Martha did you and Tom have you ever visited that?

I've so driven past that and chuckled more times than I have fingers now...

Nope, it was rainy that morning, and we bypassed. But I'm still enjoying the picture.

Indianapolis has Shapiro's Deli and a good children's museum, or it did when I was 5 and we used to visit family there.

Cranbury, PA has a Panera, which is exciting cause Philly is Au Bon Pain country.

Fallingwater is great. I would really like to go back there one of these days.

Wot?

Okay so, first, you know that Panera swallowed up StL Bread Company, I assume?

Second, there are plenty of Panere in the Philadelphia area! Way more than I can think of Au Bon Pain...s.

I'm so too late but there was also ME in PHILADELPHIA which is RIGHT BETWEEN Columbus, OH and Whatever, NJ, since there's no rode that gets you to NJ through PA that doesn't go here. (There are plenty of pretty ones that get you to NY, which are actually more worth it. Also, there are ways to get to NJ through Maryland / Delaware / DC that aren't the PA Turnpuke, but... well, okay. Also prettier. But southerly!)

But that's okay. I may come at least as far as Boston by car some time in the next year or so, in which case I'll make some attempt to seek you out, probably.

We totally DID NOT go all that close to Philadelphia, although it probably wouldn't have been too far out of the way. We went, hm, up 78 to Allentown, to NJ and 287. Or something like that. There was the nation's largest miniature village.

Now I'm double-replying. HA! janet_carter September 21 2006, 03:59:25 UTC
And yes, if you're up this way and have time, definitely give a call or lj comment or whatever.

Oh, I always forget 287, because it's not a way to get to anything relevant in NJ that's not the turnpike, which I have other more habitual ways of getting to. (I was thinking of 80/81/8(7?), which are Northern PA/southwestern NY roads.)

I've heard of this miniature village. I think the humor magazine at stepleton's and my alma mater may have touched upon it in the "Midgets are funny!" article several years ago.
