In a week and a half, my mother and I will be driving from St. Louis to Providence. Due to family/friends, we'll be stopping overnight in Zanesville, OH, and Plainfield, NJ. We suspect that there's nowhere exciting to drop in on the way between these points, but we're optimistic! Are there roadside attractions? Caves? Outlet malls? Potteries? Mom thinks there are potteries.
More specific route: St. Louis to Zanesville is all I-70 - any hidden wonders in Indianapolis, Columbus, or anywhere between?
Zanesville to Jersey, I'm not positive what route we'll take, but Google and Mapquest seem to put it across southern Pennsylvania - entering the state a ways south of Pittsburgh on 70, then working our way up on various highways, through such towns as Bedford, Harrisburg (ooh, I like that song!), and Upper Tulpehocken.
I'm not very Jersey-literate, so I don't know exactly where Plainfield is, other than what the map tells me (<30 miles west and a little south of NYC). The last time I went there, I was excited about the Care-Bear-spotting potential of the plane trip. Ooh, and the library had videos, which was new and different back then, and I watched the Disney Robin Hood for the first time.
So, inform me! I know at least a couple of you have done chunks of this drive. What are the can't-miss Amish furniture stores? We're happy to try random things, but we don't want to go too far out of the way.
Anything else to report while I'm here? My jeans ripped open and I've visited 9 stores so far trying to find a replacement. {detailed jeans-trying-on report cut here}. The weekend was full of good, free cultural stuff - Josh Ritter Thursday, Carmina Burana Friday, and Shakespeare Sunday. And, um, Can't Hardly Wait on FX on Saturday. I watched with roommate('s boyfriend); he came in 20 minutes into it, so I had to catch him up on the characters' motivations ("That's Jennifer Love Hewitt. She's wearing a tank top.") It's such a good bad movie, and it's fun spotting all of people who have background roles: Turk is the drummer! Amber Benson ponders a banana! etc.
But, yes, give me road trip tips! Music, audiobook/podcast/whatever, car game, or snack suggestions are also welcome.
