Now that Kass & Bob are here, I can't help but meet up with them and play the tourist. Of course I want to show off the best part of the Netherlands. Their B&B is close enough to the centre of town that we could walk there, so yesterday (Tuesday, marketday) we did just that. Our route went by the Kleine Berg and we popped into the comic book store, a second hand luxury furniture store (16k for a beautiful curved oak desk!!), we had espresso at Lucifer, and then got lost in the haberdashery castle Smitje.
And then there was the market. We took a left turn to eat some herring first. Kass did so like a true Dutchman, holding it by its tail and just lowering the herring into her mouth. They both loved it! I of course, was quite done with my herring in three bites. I like it, but just half of one will do me just fine once every three years!!
Then we walked to the other end of the market, picking up a stroopwafel along the way. They marveled at the fabric and upholstery fabric and picked up wool cutoffs for 1 euro each for hoods.
Because herring isn't enough for lunch, we walked over to Queen, near the Heuvelgalerie. It's a beautiful jugendstil hotel/bar inside and has a terrace where you can drink beer from the city brewery. They both tried the veal croquette (broodje kroket!) and washed it down with true Eindhoven beer called Naar de Knoppen, which was very good.
And then we walked back to their B&B for more coffee.
I think that pretty much wraps it up for now, concerning Dutch delicacies. Stuff like hutspot is winter food anyway, and I've taken them to try pretty much everything else. But tomorrow Eisirt has the day off and we'll go to the Airborne museum in Best. It's a mini vacation for me as well, having a blast, interspersed with days of frantic sewing.
