The Infinite Soundtrack

Sep 21, 2008 19:20

I was bored on the long subway ride the other day, trying to fend off anxiety about the fact that the cops were checking everyone's bags outside the Empire State building, where I work. Looming gloom and doom. To keep myself occupied, I pondered: if my life had a soundtrack, what would it be?

Granted, there are expanses of time which I can't recall for various reasons. But certainly there are songs that, when heard, create a unique sense of nostalgia.

Going in order, and with many years missing (i.e., H.S. was a blank, pretty much...is that normal?) I have compiled the following. Starting from 7th grade onward. Before 7th grade, my musical exposure consisted to my mother's love for Elton John and Billy Joel- who for many years seemed to be one person to me- and my father ceaseless bagpiping and Gaelic tunes. I really grew to the like The Beatles in 4th grade, which I prided myself on- good taste before my time. To this day I attribute any functioning part of my brain still remaining to The Beatles. If that's not a shout out, I don't know what is.

Not all these songs have lyrics that were applicable to my life; some of them were constantly played during memorable phases, and the ones I most associate with that given time.

1. First tape ever purchased by self! Stoned Temple Pilots, "Secret Garden"
2. Greenday, "Basket Case". 8th grade was painful.
3. Weezer, "Pink Triangle". Catchy tune, and I went to an all-girls H.S. and escaped experimentation.
4. Guster, "Demons"-Senior year of H.S. My first bf turned me on to a lot of music.
5. Sigur Ros, "The Nothing Song" -Learning about life in college. I discovered this song when I saw "Vanilla Sky"
6. Dave Matthews, "2-step" -Frequent trips down to Philly to see Ed, Jim and Tim.
7. J Kwon, "Tipsy"- Spring Break 2003, Jamaica, which upon reflection I am shocked I survived.
8. Coldplay, "Yellow"
9. The Strokes, "12:51"-Italy
10. Jack Johnson, "Constellations" -Thailand
11. OK GO, "Here We Go Again"-Hawaii, pre-debacle
11. The Bravery, "The Ocean" -Hawaii, post-debacle
12. Stars, "Ageless Beauty" - Arizona
13.  Third Eye Blind, "Losing A Whole Year"- my transition back into NYC
14. Maria Taylor, "Song Beneath The Song" -Now, I guess

What would your soundtrack be?
