I've had an iPod for a few years now, certainly fewer than most people. I listen to music and quite a lot of podcasts. Recently I've been worried that this constant stimulation is interfering with my creativity. I only find myself drifting on rare occasions and most of what used to be daydreaming time is now listening time. What used to be time spent pondering story turns and developments turned into listening sessions for someone else's ideas. I love some of these podcasts dearly, but I'm wondering if walking and staring at the trees and listening to the occasional snippet of conversation isn't more productive. Am I not overstimulated as it is? (Though listening to music can certainly lead to some profoundly interesting thoughts, especially the more ambient/noisy end of the spectrum.)

I've stopped listening to things in order to fall asleep because the moments before drifting off are some of the most productive in terms of strange connections and I'd rather take longer to go under than lose that precious industry.
