Been thinking a lot recently about style in writing. Brought on mainly by the fact I'm co-writing a project about two writers whose styles are worlds apart - and yet, these two writers are considered some of the most successful and influential in the English language. To add to this, my writing partner has a style of his own and one that's quite different from mine.

I've heard it said that in recent times people no longer buy books for what is said, but how it's said. Certainly my affection for Stephen King is rooted firmly in the style of his novels rather than anything that happens - the exception being the Dark Tower series which has "what" and "how" out the wazzoo.

So I'm finding myself moving further away from my "natural voice"[1] and closer towards "writing"[2]. I don't want to agonize for months over a single word, but reading about novelists re-writing their endings thirty times over certainly makes me re-examine my own work ethic and expenditure of energy[3].

The side-effect of this is that I want to start a writing blog about my writing and the nebula of topics around it.[4] If this project finds some legs, I may just do that. A new project deserves a new way to procrastinate.

[1] Whatever that sounds like.
[2] And can this then become my "natural voice" or is it by it's very definition a construct?
[3] This is partly, I think, due to my partial immersion in comics, a field renowned for its quick turn-arounds and the resulting lack of time for rewrites.
[4] If only I could convince myself that the internet needs another blog about writing. The time to strike is now!
