The Writing Thoughts of an Insomniac

Oct 23, 2010 21:05

My insomnia has reached a fever pitch - I went to bed last night around 9:45 pm and woke up at 1 am.... and stayed awake till 6 am, doing little more than sitting around and reading.  It's partly (okay, mostly) stress -- I've got this conference paper that I need to give in Chicago mid-November and it isn't even remotely close to being finished, and if you add that to the 68 papers that I have to have graded by Wednesday, well... I guess it isn't shocking that I should be stressed out.  For the first time ever, though, I have got writing (fun stuff, that is) on the brain.  I've missed this feeling -- characters chattering in my mind, entire story arcs emerging in my head like some shocking beacon, ideas cropping up for three different 'verses simultaneously... it's been over a year since this has happened, and I can't help myself.  I've got to write something, whether it's my scholarly work or not, and I really feel like I can't complain.

I've been nursing ideas for a Dragon Age series based on my "Remembrance" one-shot, using the Calliope prompt table from
parthenon, using the first five or six prompts to cover my f!cousland's memories about her life, and culminating in her final moments in the Deep Roads.  I also had a flash earlier today listening to Pink's latest album, "Funhouse," and it dawned on me that each song would provide a fantastic prompt for a Mass Effect-themed story.  "Glitter in the Air" still never fails to make me cry, and man... it would be such a good Fem!Shep and Garrus scene, the sort that occurs after a long courtship of Sheperd trying to get over Kaidan's betrayal.

Of course, my original characters are clamoring for some attention too.  My goal (beyond writing this conference paper and grading) is to write a character sketch for Pierce, and to generate some ideas for scenes that involve him.  It's been a long time in coming, really, and I'd like nothing more than to sketch out where he's been and to figure out where I'd like to take him.

So we'll see -- perhaps I'll sleep tonight.  If not, I'll work on writing and research and the like.  On a fun note, I went out for happy hour this evening and realized that one of the bartenders who works at my favorite bar looks a lot like Cullen... but with a moustache.  I am not a fan of the moustache, but I am a fan of his cute curly brown hair.  Le sigh.
