Friday & Saturday

Friday was supposed to be the last good day, weather-wise, so I worked outside in the yard most of the day, trying not to overdo it. I came in the house every couple of hours, drank water & sat or laid down for 15 minutes or so. I cut down the mints & small Luneria to make room for the mums that are blooming now.

The small purple-edged flowers on the right are mums too. I'm not good about keeping them watered, but they're doing their best.  The dining room windows overhang where they are planted so they don't get rainwater. When I started the cleaning, bees started flying around me, so I moved down a little & started again, carefully avoiding a spider & web above the purple mums. I worked until dark, but still have a patch of mint to clear.

I thought it would be fun to decorate the front porch with an autumn theme this year. We live on an arterial street, so are more likely to be vandalized, sadly. With that in mind, we bought small pumpkins & gourds. Large pumpkins tend to end up smashed in the street.

I'm glad I took this picture, because during the night, it got breezy and blew the corn stalks over. Today we secured the corn stalks more securely to the wall, and now the arrangement is different, of course. We should have been aware of the wind, because the ficus tree on the porch has been blown off the porch more times than I can remember. The ficus doesn't seem to mind, it's very healthy! I was happy I also took a picture of the trees across the street in their autumn finery, because the wind we had today blew most of the leaves off those trees. I love a windy day in warm weather, so I sat on the porch this afternoon for a while, reading & listening as the wind blew the dry leaves in swirls down the street. The leaves made a kind of clacking sound as they moved.

I finally broke my own rule of never purchasing a book for my Kindle. I'm reading a series by Susanna Kearsley. I normally get all the books from the library, however I'd just finished "The Rose Garden" & the next book was "Mariana" which I didn't have. I have the next book after "Mariana", so I wanted to read "Mariana" right away. My Kindle is one of the old black & white ones, so I really enjoy a paper book more. Our city libraries don't support Kindle, but the county libraries do. I have to pay to use the county library because I live in the city. I tried that for a year, but found I just didn't use the Kindle enough to justify the expense. The first book in the series is "The Winter Sea". She writes historical romance novels. Her characters move between the present and the past. Each book in the series is a continuation of the past (early 1700's England when King James was trying to overthrow King George for the English throne), but each book has a different woman who moves back and forth. I'm not explaining this well at all. I was hooked after reading "The Winter Sea", because the stories are so well written and don't contain bad language or graphic violence or syrupy love scenes.
