Miranda's visiting this weekend, en route to Colin & Nichola's wedding. Last night, we had mussels & chips at Belgo before wandering around Hyde Park and then going to a bar in King's Cross to celebrate my workmate's recent engagement. It was fun, apart from the mojitos costing £7 for a small glass and mainly comprising lime juice (the Bloody Marys, on the other hand, were a steal at a fiver). The place was selected as the Observer's best bar in Britain 2008, which is going a bit far. The company was good though, and it was fun introducing Miranda to work people.
Today, Miranda has gone into town to see a friend for lunch, whilst I've stayed here; in theory, I'm revising for my mocks tomorrow & Tuesday. In practice, I'm doing nothing of the kind; I've spent most of the day so far playing Scramble and
Blocks With Letters On (which I heartily recommend, if only for the BRILLIANT song you get when you complete it), listening to music, cooking eggs and reading the latest issue of SFX, which arrived on Friday.
Speaking of SFX, it brought forth great & glad tidings: David Morrissey is to appear in the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas special! David Morrissey, for those of you who are pig-ignorant, played Ripley Holden in the BBC's 2004 miniseries Blackpool. This also featured a certain David Tennant as DI Carlisle, Ripley's arch-nemesis. The chemistry between the two antagonists was brilliant, and I've hoped Morrissey would appear in Who for ages (he would have been an excellent Master);
here's a clip of them in all-singing, all-dancing action. The special will take place at Christmas time in Victorian London. The Cybermen also feature, as was revealed at the end of the last series; apparently, their role as villains of of secondary importance, with the relationship between Morrissey's character and the Doctor taking centre stage. The episode is called "The Next Doctor", a teasing bit of "will he regenerate" malarkey which I find a bit tedious, seeing as how we had a false regeneration at the end of the last series. Ah well- lets hope the episode's good, and reverses the diminishing returns thread we've seen over the past three years' specials. Russell T Davies said that it's "much more low-key" than the other specials, which is, I think, a good idea. There's only so many times you can blow up the world at Christmas, and when you have characters played by Bernard Cribbins making jokes about it, maybe it's a sign that you have indeed gone too far.
The plan for the rest of today is to (maybe) get at least some work done, then to head into town to meet Anna for a film. We're seeing something called I Am Alive as part of the London Film Festival. I'll no doubt let you know whether it's any good.
