Technically, he found me.
Remember how there used to be tons of pre-teen/teen entertainment magazines? Perhaps there still is, don't really know. Anyway, back in junior high, I wrote to a boy in the pen pal section. His name was Marc, and he was a military brat in Salt Lake City. This was back when you still sent letters via USPS, so it's quite amazing that we managed to keep in touch on and off through probably my junior year of high school.
I briefly located him in college, at the dawn of the e-mail era. I used good ol' Gopher, the system that connected a bunch of the U's together. He was at the University of Rochester, NY. I think we e-mailed a few times, but again, lost touch.
The other day, he sent me an e-mail through FB. We're now on our third form of communication, I suppose. It turns out that he did his grad work at UM. I wish I had known, I probably could have actually met him in real life. He has got one of the coolest jobs...he's a senior content editor for EW.com (as in Entertainment Weekly).
On a semi-related side note, here's a factoid about me: Shortly after I started writing to Marc, I myself had a pen pal ad posted in "Bop" magazine. At the peak of my writing, I had over 500 pen pals worldwide. I was a nerd. :)
