I've been dealing with some wackjobs here, too, but I've not moved into a position others have coveted (though I admit I'd like to change that) nor been the victim of some wacky rumor -- at least that I know of. Yet despite that, there is a rather gossipy bunch here. Most of the things they say I don't understand because they involve people who've worked here longer than I've been alive. There are some things that are off-limits, though. I've one coworker who was actually rude enough to comment about my team leader ("He's had a very challenging time leading that team") but refused to say anything more when I asked her to elaborate. Yes, she shouldn't have brought it up.
Above all else, this place seems to be about personality management. How people can actually get away with treating some people well and honorably while openly wiping their shoes on others is beyond me. Guess this is the stuff of office politics. So the smart money is on being openly polite and courteous to everyone. At least, the smart money for a rookie like me :-)
