The email isn't what she expected to see when she logs in while waiting for Chance to show up. It's something she never expected to see ever. Her hands begin to shake as the ghosts of her past sits innocently on the computer screen in front of her. Why? Why would someone send her this? As hard as Ashlee tries she can't take her eyes from the monitor. She read the words as if she's never seen them before, but in actuality she could probably close her eyes and recite them. How many times did she hold that newspaper in her hand and read over the article? How many times did she cry for herself and over her own stupidity? Heaven knows she wore the scars both literally and metaphorically.

She pushes the lid of her computer down and stands quickly, pacing the short length of the floor between her kitchen and her living room. Back and forth she walks wearing the rather cheap dark tan carpet thin. Her right hand goes to her mouth and she nips at the skin next to her thumb nail nervously. Her stomach lurches as thoughts and memories crawl through her mind. It isn't possible it could be him, Ashlee assures herself with little confidence. If it was Grady, if he wanted to mess with me, he would just show up, right? She swallows roughly against the burning acid that is making it's way up her throat. She knows that he could find her. She didn't change her name, people know where she is from Springfield. It would only take one person to say something to him...

Ashlee forces her body to stop moving and sit again. Driving a hole into her floor isn't the answer. Her head drops into her hands and her fingers push through the waves of gold. Why didn't she take precautions to make sure he could never find her again? Why didn't she take Frank up on his offer to call ahead to the Genoa City police department, just in case the horrible nightmares in her head became reality? The answer is so cocky and blatantly naïve that she can't believe after everything that happened to her she would do it, she would actually believe it. Ashlee thought that Grady would think she was too much trouble to bother with anymore. After all she got away, didn't she?

Now that her mind is clear of her own cockiness, she can see the forest for the trees. By doing what she did, she waved the flag, taunted the bull, set up the challenge and he would find away to make sure he won. God! How could she be so stupid?! She clenches her hand into a fist and pulls at the chucks of hair between her fingers. One bright hope, shining like a light in the darkness, makes her lift her head and drop her hands. Maybe it isn't him... Ashlee knows his email address, if it had been his address she never would have read it... But then who... and why? Why now?

Licking her lips, she closes her eyes and holds onto that slight miracle. Would it be so wrong to have all of her fears be for nothing? She's in a new town. She's meeting new people, making friends, connecting with Chance... this is where she belongs and that article, those memories and Grady don't have a place here. Not now and not ever. Her quaking stomach shivers even as she levels that firm battle cry in her head.

A knock at the door pulls her completely from her thoughts. She turns her wrists and sighs. Eleven o'clock. Chance is right on time. She stands from the chair and closes her eyes once again to steady her equilibrium. Once she feels like she can fake the feeling of normal, Ashlee walks slowly over to the door. Her hand on the cold knob, pauses for a half a second longer then she pulls the wood open. Chance stands there looking like salvation in front of her. Even in her less than ideal state of mind, she can't help but notice how incredibly beautiful he is. The blue t-shirt pulls tightly across his broad chest, his jeans hug his slim hips, snug enough to start her heart racing. She licks her lips suddenly feeling as hot as the sun.

She swallows and somehow the smile she didn't think she could find, found it's way onto her lips easily. “You came back.”

“I told you I would,” he replies with an easy grin of his own. “What would you like to do today?”

“How about we take Moxie for a walk around the park,” she says getting the leash from the hook next to the door. Part of the reason she wants to walk is to free her mind from her previous thoughts and the second reason is she knows if he comes into her house right now, looking that good, she wouldn't be able to stop herself from doing what she's been dying to do since last night on the couch. “I could use the fresh air,” Ashlee smiles at him.

“Okay,” he nods holding the door open to her as she clips the leash onto Moxie's collar. Together they walk out the door into the scorching hot summer day. She pulls her keys out of her pocket and hands the leash to Chance so that she can lock the door, hitting her other pocket to make sure she has some money on hand if she needs it. He waits for her at the bottom of her one step and she joins him. Walking to his car one thought weighs heavily on her mind, 'Please let that email mean nothing.'

“What's the craziest thing that's ever happened to you,” he asks as they walk through the park. Moxie runs ahead of them on her leash, enjoying the fresh air and family noise. He looks at Ashlee out of the corner of his eye. She gnaws on her bottom lip and her forehead creases in thought. A small frown forms between her eyebrows and her nose wrinkles just a tiny bit. “Or that you've ever done,” he adds after letting her ponder for a bit. He is anxious to hear her voice again.

They've been walking in relative silence since they arrived at the park. Both stuck in a holding pattern of where they go from here and what to say to get the ball rolling. Honestly, he is surprised it's him and not her that makes the first conversational move. When he came to pick her up, he noticed her eyes were a little far off, like she was captured in a lost memory or in deep thought. Ashlee's been like that most of the afternoon, only breaking out of it when something catches her attention or when the conversation between them starts to move. Chance is a bit nervous that the easy understanding from last night and this morning might have just been a figment of his imagination.

The heavy, hot summer breeze catches her lose blonde hair, sending it around her shoulders and across her face. With one hand, she pushes it back and squares her shoulders. His eyebrows slam together in confusion as she pauses on the concrete walkway and turns to face him. Moxie comes to her master's side, sitting on her behind as Ashlee rolls her tongue against her lips and pulls the bottom one between her teeth for a moment. Chance waits for whatever is struggling to come out of her mouth. His heart thumps wildly in his chest. He doesn't want to lose this connection his has found with her. He doesn't want to go back to being alone walking through a crowd. Ashlee points to a bench to the side of the walkway with her finger and he nods.

They sit stiffly on the wooden bench for a second before she sighs and turns to face him, “To understand the craziest thing I've ever done, you have to understand why I did it.” He nods in confusion and she sighs again. “The craziest thing I've ever done is frame someone for kidnapping me.” His face slacks in shock and his body goes numb. 'What the hell? Who have I started to connect with?' “I know you are probably freaking out right now, but let me explain before you call your grandmother and get me fired, okay?” He nods again, coldly. “I dated this guy, he...um...he wasn't the nicest man on earth or even the state I used to live in. He,” she swallows and her eyes get far away again. “He used to take his anger out on me...a lot. Not at first, mind you, no it came later. The beginning of the abuse was so subtle I didn't even know it was happening until I was completely overwhelmed. My friends warned me about what was going on, but I didn't see it...maybe I didn't want to see it because I loved him. One night he got really drunk, he was always at his worse while drunk and this time was a real beauty.” Chance's stomach rolls with each word and look of horror on her face. He knows that she won't tell him specifics, they weren't that close yet, but one day he is going to find out who put that lost, hurt expression in her voice and on her face. One day he is going to make the person pay. No one should ever take their anger out on a woman...that's what punching bags were for. “When I woke up in the hospital, I knew,” she continues. “I knew that I would always be in this holding pattern, so I set him up. I knew that they would never convict him, but it give me enough time to sort some stuff out and get someplace safe. My mom's an attorney turned mayor,” Ashlee smiles a little cautiously, “I stayed with her when he was released and set the ground work for a restraining order. He backed off for the most part. I wasn't the spineless girl he had under his control anymore. I went to self-defense classes, had friends move my stuff from my apartment and got my life on track. Being the mayor's daughter helped me avoid jail time...I did get arrested though. Framing someone is fraud and that comes with a heavy sentence. Luckily the hospital reports among other things showed that I was doing it to protect myself. The judge let me off with community service.” She brings her eyes back to his his and shrugs as nonchalantly as she can. “Bet you weren't expecting that when you asked a pretty lighthearted question.”

“I'm sorry you went through that,” Chance struggles to find his voice. She shrugs again. The wind blows her hair in her face and before she can push it back, he reaches out and runs his fingers through it. The silky, golden locks twist naturally around his fingers. Ashlee tilts her head into his hand unconsciously. His heart begins to race for a different reason than before. “You haven't told many people about that,” he states as a fact, because he knows it is one, but she nods her head in confirmation anyway. “Why did you tell me? Not that I'm not honored but we just started getting close, why would you open yourself up like that?”

Blue eyes connect with gray blue and she holds her breath in her chest for a second then says softly, “I trust you.”

And with that, those three words, he takes a breath and makes a move, pulling her close with his hand at the back of her head. His lips caress hers, sliding back and forth against her own sweet tasting mouth. Her full lips part on a sigh, barely heard over the roaring excitement in his head. His world is completely taken over by her. Her taste, her smell, the way her body presses against his, her small sighs that sing on the air and seep into his body. It's like every molecule knows her and is awaken by her kiss. A growl rumbles through his chest, it's been so long since he's been this close to someone, since he's wanted someone as much. Ashlee's hands pull him closer on the bench, the bite of Moxie's leash digs into this shoulder, but he can't help enjoying the way they seem to fit. She breaks the kiss, panting air into her lungs, against his lips, and grins at him. “Wow.”

Chance laughs bashfully, “Yeah, I agree.”

Ashlee's laugh comes out breathless and she leans back in for another kiss, this one much quicker (much to his chagrin) than their first one. “Come on,” she says standing and holding out her hand to him. “Let's finish our walk and then go someplace colder. It's hot as hell out here.” He laughs again then he stands as well and they continue walking through the park. His hand never slipping out of hers.

“I think we've earned this,” she says handing the vendor a ten dollar bill and taking the melting ice cream cones from his hands. She extends Chance his chocolate one and she licks a drop off of her vanilla one. “Mm,” she hums to herself closing her eyes and savoring the taste on her tongue.

“I could have paid you know, you already made me breakfast,” he watches her as she raises her eyebrow at him. He holds up his hands. “It's only fair.”

“You can buy me dinner or lunch some time,” she says softly.

“How about today?”

“I'd like that,” she grins then turns to watch the people move toward there cars or through the park.

So,” she looks at him. “I've been meaning to ask you since the fourth of July, why can't you swim?”

Ashlee can feel the blush heat up her cheeks and she looks away from him again. “Um, that's kind of a long story...”

“I have time,” he says as he takes her hand in his.

“So do I,” Ashlee responds, “But I think we've dealt with enough heavy stuff for today. Why don't we stay fluffy for the rest of the day?”

“Chick flick day it is,” Chance nods with a laugh when she rolls her eyes.
