The Derek Trucks Sickness

Aug 14, 2006 22:49

We (James, Noah, Nick Dimetriades and I) walked in to Ichiban to get some pre-show eats. Who was sitting in the next booth? That's right, Derek Trucks and Mike Mattison were. It was gonna be that type of night.

So I basically just went to the best concert ever. Derek. Fucking. Trucks. They sold about 250 tickets to the Linda by removing almost all the chairs...So our early spots in line got us standing room in the first row. It was so fucking worth it. The band was on. Afterwards Kofi Burbridge (on the keys/flute) said they were having a blast because after opening for other bands they were getting to stretch out, and it sure showed.

Musically they were more adventurous, reinterpreting some old tunes, trying new introductions to songs and generally just playing some great jazz, funk, blues and rock.

Derek himself grows with every passing month. Some moments he channeled Duane Allman, some licks were almost like Hendrix or John McLaughlin and some were plain old Derek wailing away with his sliding distortion.

Tonight, the groove was thick. On some songs you could just feel the band lock in behind Todd Smalley and Yonrico Scott as Kofi played some Hancock-esque heavy funk on the clav or thick chord clusters on the keys.

I got a setlist and they all signed it. All it all, a stupendous night of music...Can't wait to hear the tapes.

derek trucks, concerts
