When did she find the time? Five'll get you 10 that a lot of it was during classes when she was supposed to be paying attention. Then there's always on the bus, hanging out with friends at the mall, staying up late under the covers with the lights out, etc. Besides, unless I miss my guess, it's now viewed as cool to be texting someone. It means you're technically savvy and that you've got social connections. To a 13 or 14 year old girl, those'd be pretty important.

I do it occasionally, but I'm with you in terms of preferring to just talk to someone. There's a lot more context that I'll get from hearing the voice than I can get from just text.
