So since I can't find the answer to these anywhere else . . .

I just had a couple of questions about blocking that I can’t find answers to elsewhere:

  1. When doing a gauge swatch for something that has to be blocked, do you have to block the gauge swatch?

  2. Do you have to re-block something every time you wash it?

Any advice would be helpful too.  :)  I've never blocked before and I have a pair of socks that I'm ( Read more... )

When doing a gauge swatch for something that has to be blocked, do you have to block the gauge swatch?

First off, you really ought to block everything - even if it's a synthetic that won't block to shape, it will even out the stitches.

Second, you should always block your swatch. Since yarns have a tendency to behave a bit differently once they're washed, it's good to know in advance what you're getting yourself into. For example, a lot of superwash wools have a tendency to "bloom" after a good washing. This means that the yarn itself plumps up, which can make your gauge larger than it originally was. So, measure and take notes on your gauge swatch before you block it, then see what happens after you block it. You're always aiming for post-blocking gauge.

Do you have to re-block something every time you wash it?It depends on the item, and the fiber content. A wool sweater might need some light blocking every time you wash it, say if you corrected a problem with the right sleeve being a bit too short by blocking it that half ( ... )

This is definitely the most complete answer I've gotten anywhere. Thank you! :) I'll definitely start blocking my swatches--it's something the knitting book I have never suggested (and it would explain why the last couple of pairs of socks I've made have been a wee bit too big even though my gauge was right on pre-blocked).

And I did think the blocking wires looked like they would help immensely. Putting five billion T-pins into a shawl did not appeal to me. LOL

Again, thank you muchly for the answers!

Hey, no problem. If there's at least one thing I'm good for, it's knitting advice.
