Skip from surveying upstairs got talking to me about Dick Fosbury-- you know the Olympic High-Jumper who invented the "Fosbury Flop", which is now the predominant way to high-jump. It's unbelievable how small the world can seem sometime.
Mr. Fosbury is now an engineer who lives in Idaho. Skip and Jim (surveyors from upstairs) have both met Mr. Fosbury. Skip actually interviewed for a job in Idaho in Sept 2001. Skip thought it'd be nice for me to have a photo of 'im since I used to high-jump. I wasn't any olympic high-jumper, but I did win state in 1998 (almost 10 years ago... eesh) with a
jump of 5'4". I probably could have done bigger, better things with my athletics, but I couldn't find the time to train in college and I ultimately chose education over athletics... and subsequently lost 15-30 lbs of muscle and gained some 50 lbs of fat. Ugh. Granted, I was thin as a rail then, so I'm "average" now... but still.
I guess that's why I rant from time to time about the past. It's always fun to look back on where you used to be and what you've done. It's a bit difficult to comprehend that things have changed since then and you're not who or what you used to be. Which is why I guess Dick Fosbury is so awesome... he was an Olympian... now now he's an engineer. If Mr. Fosbury can do it, so can I.
Though, I wonder if he still, from time to time, looks through all the photos and newspaper clippings from the days of "The Flop" that I assume he has.... I wonder...
