Fic Recs for the Needy

Feb 14, 2007 20:08

Like I said in my previous post, I do actually go through the pages of crap at fanfiction.net to find those rare gems that sometimes make it all feel worthwile. quarterturn asked me to rec some of those fics that I found, and since I'd always planned on recommending fics on my journal (but have only done so once in the entire history of it), I am more than happy to oblige.

Title: Shadows of the Future
Fandom: Star Wars
Summary: Obi-Wan lost the duel on Mustafar, but instead of dying, he finds himself on a ship leaving Tatooine, with his old Master and a familiar young boy. As events begin to unfold, can he stop the future he knows from occuring? TPM AU, ObiAniQui bonding.
Why I recommend it: It's just a really great story overall. I've always liked the whole going-back-in-time cliche plot, but very few people handle it well when it comes to consequences - not just for the plot, but also for the emotions of characters involved. This fic hits all the right notes, and I really do adore the familial bonding taking place between a still innocent Anakin, a much wiser Obi-Wan, and a completely baffled Qui-Gon.

Title: Close to Home...So Far Away
Fandom: AtS/BtVS
Summary: AU. No one in L.A. can see him, hear him, or touch him... but is Doyle a ghost, or something entirely different?
Why I recommend it: This is really one of the very few, truly good Doyle fics out there. As someone who absolutely loved Doyle, cried like a baby while watching the episode where he died, and exploded with outrage over Lindsey tricking Spike by pretending to be Doyle...no words can describe how much I love this fic. The characters are great, both casts, and the Scourge plot (left to kind of drift away in canon) is developed. Takes place during late Season 1 of AtS, Season 4 or thereabouts on BtVS.

Title: Vast
Fandom: Smallville
Summary: Chloe and Whitney deal with what it's like to be far too human in the presence of a would-be Superman and his ideal lady love.
Why I recommend it: Yes, it is a Chloe/Whitney pairing that takes place before Whitney goes off to join the whatever-he-joined. As a somewhat devout Clark/Chloe shipper (I abandoned the fandom and the show when the PTB basically said Chloe was always going to be screwed), it surprised me how much I enjoyed this fic and this pairing. I read it in a fit of anger and belief that Chloe definitely deserved someone better than that oaf Clark who never seemed to get it - and I fell in love. Amelia Kay is such a great writer, taking the time to actually develop the not-quite hostile relationship between Chloe and Whitney in the beginning towards something...more. It's hard to pull off believably, especially since I don't think these two had any interaction in canon, but she does it, and does it well.

Title: Just a Face on a Train
Fandom: Spider-Man 2 Movie
Summary: After rescuing a train from Doc Ock's attack, Peter Parker found himself unmasked and indebted to those he had just saved. 4 months later, a train passenger again crosses paths with the young hero.
Why I recommend it: Because it's great. Heh, I mean, really. The story is from the OC's point of view, but it's all right, she's married and has a kid. ;) No worries. I actually love how Maggie handles everything after seeing Peter and knowing who he is and what he does, struggling to figure out how to say she knows in order to thank him - which she really wants to do, since he saved her and her baby. It's a great story, especially since I've always been a little outraged at how people (::coughJJcough::) treat Spider-Man in all the various canons. He's probably the only hero that gets slandered and verbally abused rather than praised and adored by the masses.
