I just read a genderbending fic where everything turned out crap. Like, in canon, the character goes through tough times, acts like an asshole, but then comes through in the end and saves the day. Apparently, genderbending that character into a woman means that even though she does the same things, she ends up living a futile life and dying in the end in a supremely depressing way.
Like...okay.
I mean, on one level, I understand storytelling and the need to explore different reactions from people with regards to a genderbent main character.
HOWEVER, when everything your genderbent character touches falls to crap even though her actions are the same as her male self, and then she dies a really depressing death? I'm not going to be thinking about storytelling and themes. I'm going to be walking away with a bad taste in my mouth because I just read a story where the only difference was that the main character was female and it was enough to ruin everything.
So, thanks for that, I guess.
