Par-tay on wheels.

Last night was a fantastic party. Special thanks to
digitalemur,
yaleartificer,
ddreslough,
invisiblemouth and the little bean for coming out. Unfortunately
inle_rah was sick, so didn't get to join us, but was sweet enough to buy a ticket online to support the league.

I wasn't sure if the whole league was going to totally 80s themselves up, but I wasn't disappointed. From Demanda Beatin', who was straight out of a Madonna video, to Nelly Knuckles, who was all 80s old-school rap, to Pygmy Fantastic (one of the refs) who did a full-on Twisted Sister outfit, it was great. Plus a ton of the people attending went all out as well. Special props go to
ddreslough who immediately made me think of a certain Olivia Newton-John video. And of course,
yaleartificer and his "best 80's moves" award.

The preliminary report is that we did really well, and had a bigger turnout than expected. Add in that we were selling snacks and drinks on top of admission, so I think we'll beat our goals. Everyone seemed to have a really great time, and we had been hoping for families to come, and there were. At the end of the night, we even posed for pictures with some of the young girls, including the little bean (although she needed some encouragement first).

The fact that we got a couple hundred people to come skate with us a little over 3 months before our exhibition bout bodes well for the turnout we'll be able to get for that in December. Plus afterwards at the bar/bowling alley across the street, we were all talking up the league to people there and handing out business cards. I had the misfortune of having some half-drunk guy ask me lots of questions at the bar, but he loves the idea of derby coming back. He also said several times that when he heard the rollergirls were coming over, he thought "we'd all look like guys" and was surprised that we were all cute. Then he tried to buy me a shot....thanks, but no. But I'm getting very good at the friendly sales pitch to anyone and everyone.
