For someone who has been indulging in an occasional glass of wine since she was sixteen (and whose boyfriend teasingly calls her the alcoholic just because she likes to have a  single drink every night with dinner), I am shockingly bad at opening wine bottles. The kitchen is littered with bits of cork from my latest attempt. But I did not actually break the cork, no pieces got in the bottle, and now I have a lovely (if rather cheap) Merlot to go with the eggplant Parmesan I just made. I should drink red wine more often; I always forget in between times how much I like it. But a bottle, even when corked and refrigerated, only lasts a few days and I only drink a glass a night, so I tend to have to pour it out when it goes sour. This one I’m hoping I can use to cook with; jarred spaghetti sauce is so much better when doctored with wine and garlic and basil.

This week was lovely. Michael took it off to spend with me (and because he desperately needed a break from his company). We went to the San Francisco Zoo, which was very fun, and Orinda, which was not. He wanted to climb the pretty oak hills around Orinda, but it’s a very non pedestrian-friendly city, so we had to cross freeways and such before we could find a way into the hills, and once we did, we figured out that it was a protected watershed and we needed permits to hike there. The permit was only ten bucks, but would have required walking two miles to their offices, so we gave it up in disgust. But we did get to go climbing in the Berkeley hills, where we saw two deer and a flock of wild turkeys. I didn’t know turkeys could fly. And climb up trees. They were intimidating, but Michael protected me with a stick ("They’re turkeys, what are they going to do? And I have a stick!”). And we went to Alembic, this really great bar in the Haight that I’ve been wanting to try. They have absolutely delicious cocktails (and cheapish for the city, which of course means $9 instead of $10-15) and a really cool atmosphere. I will definitely be going back. We also made it to La Note for breakfast, but I don’t think I’ll be going back there with him because he doesn’t like French food/thought it was girly and too expensive. I guess I’ll save it for girlfriends and go elsewhere with him. Maybe Jodie’s in Albany for the best fried breakfast food ever, where I went with Dana and Derek before they left for New York. So much grease, but so good.

I’ve been pretending to write my paper today, but mainly rediscovering old good books (L.M. Montgomery, who I absolutely loved in middle school. I find faults now, of course, but I still love reading her), catching up on The Office (I missed new episodes for a whole month), and spending too much time online. Luckily, this is a 7 to 9 page paper for my pass-not pass class, so I’m just going to use unused material from my thesis, since it can be on Mrs. Dalloway, and I’m already about three pages in, so it shouldn’t be too bad. And I needed the break. It's been so nice to laze around this week. My draft was turned in on time and I really, really hope I have an argument this time around. Been applying to a lot of jobs, though not as many as I should be, but no hits yet. This search is going to be really frustrating and I sort of think I’m just going to end up in Stockton learning to drive/prepping for GREs/doing grad school apps. Which I guess wouldn’t be that bad a thing.
