The knock at the door caught Gibbs by surprise. Abby and Kate were having a girls' night, and he really didn't want to think about just what they might be getting up to. Ducky was sitting with his mother, and McGee just wasn't the type to show up on the boss's doorstep with no warning. He opened the door slowly, gun in one hand, and felt his eyes widen in surprise when he recognized Tony DiNozzo.

It had been nearly a week since he had met the other man, and since Tony and Abby had made their shocking offer. He hadn't done anything yet, and from the way that Abby talked everyone was fine with that. They were giving him time to figure out what he wanted with no pressure, though Abby did keep him up-to-date on what Tony had been doing. But from the expression on the other man's face, something bad had happened since the last time he had spoken with Abby.

The green eyes were dull, the ready smile was nowhere to be seen, and the usually spiky black-dyed hair was oddly flat. He was leaning against the door frame and almost radiating exhaustion. Without a second thought Gibbs slid his gun back into the nearby drawer and ushered Tony into the house, one hand resting against his back.

A moment later he had Tony sitting in a chair, a glass of Scotch in his hand. Gibbs sat across from him, waiting for the other man to meet his eyes before speaking.

"What happened, Tony?"

Tony sighed, taking a long, slow sip of his Scotch. "I didn't know where else to go, Gibbs. There was a crime scene, first thing this morning...." He closed his eyes, fingers absently fidgeting with his glass. "There was so much blood: on the floor, the walls. Footprints, hand prints, smears....all that death. Even the little girl."

And suddenly Gibbs understood. "That's why you came here, isn't it? Because as bad as what you saw was, you knew I'd seen worse."

The dark head nodded, green eyes finally blinking open and staring at Gibbs. "Pretty much. I needed to know that I could see that, and still be human afterwards."

"No one's ever the same after something like that, but the fact that's it's obviously bothering you so much is a sure sign that you're still human. It's when you stop feeling like this that you need to worry." He shifted over, kneeling in front of Tony's chair and slid his hands onto the other man's knees, lightly gripping. Then he leaned forward and kissed Tony, nothing more than a gentle press of lips on lips.

When Gibbs pulled away after a long moment, there was the hint of a smile curving Tony's lips. "Thanks, Gibbs. I really needed that."

Gibbs rose to his feet, then held out a hand to Tony. "Stay for the night, Tony. I can't promise to make everything better, but I'll do what I can."

Tony nodded, taking Gibbs' hand and letting the older man pull him to his feet. "I think you're selling yourself short, Gibbs. If anyone could promise me peace of mind and deliver, I think it'd be you."

Gibbs snorted, lightly rapping the back of Tony's head. They'd deal with everything in the morning, after Tony had gotten some sleep. Then they'd need to have a long talk with Abby and figure out just where all of this was going. But for the moment, Gibbs was just going to enjoy holding Tony as he slept, and try to keep the nightmares at bay.
