betty and veronica made up at the end. friday night lights. tim/lyla. tim/tyra. 633 words. PG13. Dillon changes all around him until he has no choice - he makes a commitment and loves a girl.

Tim half-expects Lyla to come back too.

Being with Tyra is easy as breathing, something she’s had in her bones since she was five and not quite as long for him. Her legs wrap around his waist just as his hands hike them up a little higher. In sync, compatible, similar. Billy and Mandy shudder from the sidelines and Tim counts the freckles on her back. Seven, same as always.
Lyla had two on her neck, right next to each other, that he used to run his fingertips over in awe and tease her about. Being in love with Lyla was never easy. That doesn’t mean he’s complaining.

Becky and Luke live happily ever after. This is important to him.

Lyla gets an email at the beginning of her sophomore year. It’s from Tim. She stares at it and is tempted to delete it - arrow hovering over the garbage can icon and she has a new boyfriend now anyways. His name is Scott and he’s a basketball player. Buddy was horrified.
She doesn’t delete it but she doesn’t read it either. Her fingers tremble as she punches in the number but she lets out a sigh of relief when he answers.
“Lyla Garrity?”
Her stomach unknots and her tongue gets tied and she starts sweating a little.
“Hi Tim.”
He smiles wide and pretty, all the way in Texas.

Julie and Seven get married in Dillon five years after they get engaged. Tyra’s graduated and Tim’s coaching. Lyla lives in Charleston. She’s not a bridesmaid and she sits on Seven’s side of the chapel. Tim doesn’t think he’s ever seen anything as pretty as her in that moment - tanned skin and light blue dress and hair tumbling down her back like an accident. He can’t see her shoes but he doesn’t think they’re cowboy boots.
Tyra’s always loved him, even when she thought she loved Landry but it’s not the same for him. Lyla used to take up so much space in his heart that his fingers would itch to touch her and he only slept well when she was next to him.
This is not to say that he doesn’t love Tyra too. It’s just that once upon a time all he could picture was Lyla. That’s changed now, but he’s just saying that once, that was what he thought.
-
“Wanna dance, Garrity?” he asks at the reception. She’s nursing a flute of champagne and picking at a piece of cake.
“Well that depends, is Tyra going to bite my head off if I say yes?”
“Don’t flatter yourself, you’re not that special.”
Lyla smiles back and steps into his arms. “Sure, Tim. Why not?”
Tim dances with Lyla while Tyra’s dancing with Smash and all of a sudden he can’t stop laughing. Lyla stares at him with a question in his eyes and kisses her forehead.
She steps on his toes and doesn’t apologize. He doesn’t ask her to.
There’s no boy waiting for her back in Charleston but she doesn’t tell him that.

When they were younger and knew how to love each other better, she smiled a lot more. That’s what he notices now. Now they’re older and he’s in love with Tyra and he pretends not to know what Lyla looks like naked.
He missed a step somewhere - in between being in prison and being released and the path he took instead isn’t so bad. The next time he sees her is at his own wedding.
Her dress is Panther blue and it almost hurts to look at her. She’s sitting on Tyra’s side.
“I do,” he says first to Tyra and Lyla claps with everyone else when the bride and groom kiss.
