My Dead Files (or, multi-fandom fic bits)

Dec 16, 2010 18:52

This week, I had this really stressful moment (yeah, I know, I'm a geek, but it seriously stressed me out) where I couldn't find a bit of fic I'd written about a year ago. I wanted to actually use it for something, finally, and then couldn't find it. I still can't, and since it's not on my computer, archived in google docs, saved in my email, on my phone, in hardcopy in my binder o'fic (which is now actually four binders; I write too much), or on the thumb drive where I save stuff I'm working on while I'm supposed to be, um, working, I'm assuming that it's pretty much gone for good. I can't even describe how sad that makes me, because it was something I intended to do something with one day, and now I can't seem to recreate it. I'll probably get something similar worked out one day, but it won't be the same, and knowing my brain, I'll always remember the missing file being better than the second attempt.

Where am I going with this? Well, see, the thing is, I'm careless with fic. I find it all the time, lying forgotten in random places. I dig through my email and find stuff I jotted down via phone and emailed to myself. I empty out my purse and find stuff written on napkins. I "write" fic via the audio record on my phone while I'm driving, and then try to piece it into something readable later. Most of the fic I 'write' never ends up being more than a scrap of paper lying around my dining room or something, and when I do get around to typing some of it up, it hangs out in random files, waiting for me to do something with it, and then one day my computer crashes or whatever, and that bit of fic is gone. Most of the time that's not a big deal, but sometimes? Yeah, big, frustrating deal

So, in an attempt to not lose the bits of fic that I don't have any real plans for, and yet would be heartbroken to lose because you just never know (and seriously, stuff has sat on my harddrive for three years before ever being made into, you know, a real fic), I'm putting them all somewhere safe, where they don't depend on me remembering where they are or not crashing my computer or accidentally throwing away a notebook or something. And because these are all fic bits that I'm relatively sure will never, ever end up as anything more than what they are right now - half-written bits of story lacking context or, for the most part, any real plot beyond 'this one random moment that would be cool in a fic' - I'm putting them where other people can see them. After all, what's the point of writing something to just let it die a boring death on my harddrive?

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I put them up over here. I was originally just going to stick them in an LJ post, but then realized there were 80 pages worth of deadfiles on my computer, and so... yeah. External website it is.

There's a few of my normal fandoms (Harry Potter (there's even an SS/HG one, though it's darkfic, so... read with caution?), La Femme Nikita, and Alice in Wonderland 2010), along with a few new-to-me fandoms (28 Days Later, Battlestar Galactica, and Doubt) in which I will, at this rate, never actually finish a fic. Lol. If anyone's interested, they're there for perusing. HP folks, please don't judge me; most of the ones in the HP section were attempts at fulfilling prompts for the hp darkfest last year, and so there's a lot of genuinely screwed up stuff happening there. *shifty eyes*
