"To play with them is just the balls..." [TA1]

...just one of many characteristically entertaining quotes one could pull from the first night of Tori @ the Paramount last weekend.

After stressing hardcore that I wouldn't make it to the theater on time to take advantage of my VIP ticket, I got there..... late. Luckily, security let me in through the side door and I was able to catch up with the group at the merch table. After hearing Tori soundcheck "Body & Soul," "She's Your Cocaine," "Hoochie Woman," "Secret Spell," "You Can Bring Your Dog," and "Raspberry Swirl," the group was finally allowed in to watch our two exclusive songs. There were no seating restrictions, so of course I bee-lined for the front and happily positioned myself front row-center. First she attempted to be a "normal," social person by explaining exactly what soundcheck is intended to do. Once she got over that, she went into "Tear In Your Hand," followed by "Lust."

After sound check, we were released back out so that we could get back in (yeah, I know). I met up with Angel, Izzy, and Matt outside to discuss soundcheck. Then we headed inside and proceeded to hang out and tell crazy work/life stories through the opening act we couldn't care less about. At about 9, we all went to our respective, separate seats. They were filming for her DVD that night, and so being the film geek that I am, I found myself watching them practice camerawork before the lights went down.

She opened as Santa with the same 6 songs we heard from outside sound check. It was SO awesome to finally see "Raspberry Swirl" with her band again. Then it went into an interlude of a "Professional Widow" remix while she costume-changed herself back into Tori. Some highlights of the 2nd part of the set list were: A rad version of "Crucify," the fact that she played "Sugar," "Cornflake Girl," and "Caught A Lite Sneeze." Then it went into her T & Bö portion, where she proceeded to quote her daughter, British accent and all, as saying "Mummy, you look like a poodle!" Once the stylist finished primping her, she sang and improv and two songs before the band joined her on stage again. Of course I was stoked to hear an amazing arrangement of "Code Red" (re: myspace name) before she left everyone cheering for an encore.

She came back, of course, to sing "Precious Things" (i.e. Jackie's favorite) as we all rushed the stage while security yelled at everyone to stop blocking the aisles. Angel and I found each other just in time to be forced to find new seats to call our own since security was being really friggin' anal. Then Tori went into "Bouncing Off Clouds," which cracked Angel and I up as the whole room started bouncing and waving their arms as though they were at a hip-hop show. She ended with "Hey Jupiter" as a second encore and the perfect finale to an exhilarating evening that I personally had been in need of.

Photos weren't allowed, but I did manage to snap a few
