wasn't that the tagline to that tv show that was on pbs when we were kids? something like that. i always hated that little jingle, like it was some sort of manufactured reason to get kids to read rather than reminding you how your imagination can go crazy when you read.
i'll get back to that later.
anyway, I had a fantastic day today, all because of one thing - there were no plans. I woke up without an alarm for the first time in weeks, finished off a box/containter/thing? of oreos for breakfast, and went out to have lunch with lauren who was back in town and i haven't heard from in awhile. we went to brown's and it was delicious! it also made me realize among other things that i need to start having real food in my kitchen again...yeah... Anyways, as I was driving back, I decided I didn't want to go home, so I finally went to walmart to get the few cooking utensils that I've been meaning to get to make cheesecake!
they didn't have them.
so, spur of the moment, I remembered that there was a cooking store in the crossgates mall, so off I went. went to crossgates mall, they didnt have the stuff either. *blank stare* really? cmon. i want my cheesecake people.
decided to waste more time, so I did some shopping, couldn't find anything good, so I ended up walking aimlessly.
ran into nick since he works at brookstone and he showed me his two "products" that he was showing off to people anywhere he went. one was a pillow. moving on, the other was a new-age etch-a-sketch that is basically a piece of plastic with a pressure sensitive drawing pad that you can erase by pressing a button. I asked if he liked it, and he went on, "well the idea of the thing is pretty cool, but there's no save or print function. so now whenever people come up to me and ask how do you erase it, I have to press the button and erase whatever is on the pad. Now, I've drawn some pretty elaborate pictures on this thing and it absolutely sucks whenever some walks up to me and asks, oh! how do you erase it!"
I thought it was a pretty serious issue for the mental state of an employee of brookstone. that place is usually pretty good, but i can see how it could drive you crazy. after awhile the massage chairs probably dont cut it, and you'd want to smother yourself with a tempurpedic pillow while customers fly the rc helicopter in circles over your head.
ended up in borders afterward and picked up the fountainhead which i've been meaning to do lately. while i was in there i remembered that the dexter tv series had been inspired by a book, so i wandered over and picked that up. sat down to read, and by the time i realized i was on chapter 6, i realized i'd probably been in there for quite awhile. ended up going back home, but in the spirit of non-planning i stopped at bella for pizza. then went to the library to read some more, but the building was closed. went to the vcc instead and read some more. i think i realized one reason that i was productive last semester and not in ones prior. the more time i spend in places that i'm not used to, the more things im likely to accomplish. once i get used to somewhere (ex. my apartment) the less likely i will actually get things done there. including reading, i just cant do it at home.
more thoughts on productivity/ambition/general usefulness to come.
