“We need a bouquet for Gibbs.”
McGee doesn’t look up from his computer as he replies, “Then why are you asking me? I don’t know anything about flowers.”
“I haven’t even -- oh, fine.” Abby casts herself on his shoulders with a sigh. “I don’t know anything about flowers either, McGee. But you have a feel for these things. Besides, if you screw it up, it’s not like Gibbs will know.”
“I don’t want to get Gibbs flowers,” he grumbles. “He doesn’t like flowers. Hell, I don’t like flowers, they make me sneeze. Get him a cactus, or something else he won’t have to worry about.”
“A cactus!” Abby stands up with her spine ram-rod straight, like she’s had an electric shock. “That’s brilliant McGee!”
McGee doesn’t mention that it’s because Gibbs has actually wanted a cactus for a long time now. Lilies and roses don’t do much for him, but the Marine is fascinated by a plant that doesn’t need anyone or anything to help it survive. At the time, Timothy had replied that a cactus couldn’t be approached for the same reason. It had been a spiteful thing to say.
He stares silently at Gibbs empty desk as Abby begins to bustle away.
“Abby --”
“Hm?”
She comes closer and he can say, “I’m in love with Jethro, aren’t I.”
At first, she doesn’t reply. Her mouth purses as she thinks; Tim’s gaze doesn’t leave Gibbs desk. “I don’t know, Tim,” she says at last. “I think you should ask him that.”
