Powder

"It’s beautiful, like powdered sugar," Jack said as they stood in the silent dark, snowflakes drifting around them on the Plass.

"Does it do this where you’re from?" Gwen asked.

"What...snow? No. It doesn’t. It’s very warm and arid."

“I couldn’t live there, then,” Gwen decided. “I like seasons.”

"Oh there are seasons. There's the hot season, the slightly hotter season, and the extremely hot season."

"Does it rain much?"

"Not very, but we had sandstorms. Imagine being sprinkled with a very fine and soft sand, not the sort that scratches you on impact. Gray and I used to…" Jack swallowed and looked away.

Gwen tucked a gloved hand into the crook of his arm.

"I’d like to see a soft sandstorm," she said, quietly.

"No you wouldn’t," he said, smiling at her. "It gets down your pants."

Stolen

Cardiff in the snow was gorgeous, Gwen thought.

The Pierhead building looked like a medieval castle, and it would be so easy to believe she had been transported back in time. The flurries had started up again, and the wind in the Plas was blowing snow in every direction.

A steady arm turned her around and gently tugged her into an embrace. Jack’s coat was open, his body warm. She blinked back snowflakes, savoring the stolen moment and the smug look in his eyes…

As the lift descended, she knew there was no time or place she would rather be.

Snow in Cardiff

She sat, staring into her the depths of her glass. It was almost empty. She thought of the last moments before she had left the hub. His embrace had been just a little too tight, lasted just a little too long. The kiss he placed on her cheek - was it wistful? Did it hint at things that might have been, or was she reading too much into it? Why was she sitting, lost on her own sofa, wishing that she could be holding his hands?

There was a knock on the door, and she started. It wasn’t possible that she had conjured him just by thinking about him, was it? Her heart began to race, and she took a few deep breaths before rising and going to the door.

When she opened it, Rhys’ broad smile greeted her. “I forgot my keys,” he said cheerfully, brushing at his coat as he stepped past her. “Did you know that it has started to snow? Snow in Cardiff. We might have a white Christmas this year.” And she smiled at him, but couldn’t resist a quick glance out the door, just in case.

Three Drops

The weevil barely nicked Jack’s jugular vein, but the wound looked worse than it actually was. The blood had dribbled down his dress shirt and had started to stain his greatcoat. Jack staggered over to where the weevil’s body fell to retrieve his Webley.

As he bent over, three drops of his own blood dripped onto the fresh snow. “Lips as red as blood, skin as white as snow, hair as black as ebony,” he chuckled. Jack had to wonder why on earth was he thinking of fairytales after bringing down a rogue weevil.

“Jack? Jack, are you alright?” A Welsh voice next to him brought him out of his daydream. Jack focused on Gwen’s face with a bit of difficulty. “Jack?” He winced as she softly examined his black eye and broken cheekbone.

“I’m fine. It’ll be gone in a few minutes.” Jack cupped Gwen’s cheek in return, brushing a strand of her dark hair out of her face.

Realization dawned. Oh, so that’s why, Jack thought. I wonder if I’ll ever get to wake her with a kiss. Turnabout is fair play and all…
