"we'll see how much the hurt we hold inside is linked.... it's that dark secret that links us all.... how imperialism, patriarchy, racism affected our parents which affect us now.... and of course, we are made to believe that the solution is not political but personal...
we are made to believe that things such as suicides, gang violence, drugs, child abuse, rape, sexual assault, domestic violence are "individual" problems or "family" problems...
but once you start talking and realize how many experience the same things.... across town, across states, across countries and oceans.. perhaps all the bullshit we experience in our lives are linked to bigger systems of oppression....
the idea of simply keeping quiet, ignoring it, not addressing it and not focusing on political solutions will only mean the cycle occurs in future generations....
filipino means recognizing how the spanish and especially american masters beat our forefathers/mothers into physical submission... with belts and rifle butts to maintain power... such learned behavior for discipline now manifested in 2006 in how filipino parents "discipline" their kids... using their master's tools of physical violence....
it's all fuckin' connected. just like how our parent's immigration is linked to imperialism. still going on. just like how it's linked to higher tuition, housing, drug use, gang violence...
it's the conditions in our community that are the problem....
if through my ND work i can prevent the shit i went through from happening to someone else, then that's my step forward...
but it requires a system change.... otherwise you'll get burned out trying to save a seemingly endless number of victims and folks in need... cuz in the age of imperialism, the number of victims is endless....
imperialism is a human-made system which can be undone by human alternatives. if you think it's impossible, then the institutional learning did it's job.
being a slave to the system is not realizing your power to change it."
