The next stop on our Adventuremice: Mermouse Mystery tour was Bristol, where my co-author
Philip Reeve and I headed to
lovely Max Minerva's bookshop! It had expanded (and doubled!) since our last visit and the new premises in Henleaze had a lovely children's area. We got busy painting the window:
I haven't told anyone about the origins of Meepie the mermouse! Meepie was originally the cat of my Aunt Elizabeth, whom my family visited on my first trip to Britain way back in the 1980's. My sister and I were fascinated by my aunt's exotic Scottish house, with its see-through key-holes (just like the spy books!), double taps, heated bathroom towel rails, but most excitingly, her cat Meepie. (Meepie, of course, got his name because he only said 'meep!')
We didn't only paint the window! We drew on the wall, too, vandals that we are.
There are so many Reeve & McIntyre references in the shop! You might remember this painting from several years ago
when our Kevin went on his virtual tour.
Here's author and school librarian
Amy Feest who was one of the people who looked after us. (Thanks, Amy!)
And here we are with owner Sam Taylor, whom we met on our last visit, and who took us to
Henleaze Junior School to do a big Adventuremice assembly for the lower primary school. We're taking a selfie with Year 5 teacher Kate O'Neill, who made everything run smoothly. Thanks for drawing with us, Henleaze! If you want to learn how to draw more things, do visit
Adventuremice.com.
Do visit either of the two branches of Max Minerva's if you're ever in Bristol, it's such a wonderful shop, and in the Henleaze branch, do keep an eye out for mermice and such! Thanks so much, lovely bookshop team! And
Frasier Hutchinson at David Fickling Books for organising with them!
