My Instant Memories

I've been re-reading Again To Carthage, John L. Parker's sequel to Once A Runner (my profile picture). And in it, the main character goes through some tough times, friends and family dying, missing old times. It brought me back to times that I miss.

I miss old friends. Feeling on top of the world. Being the best around in running, on top of the world at Conference meets. Driving around Fenton yelling "Bitch!" out the window at innocent passer-bys. Having a great girl crazy about me, looking across the room at me, making me feel like I was invincible. Having a group of friends that I knew as well as I know myself, and them knowing me just as well as I knew them.

At least that part is still in tact. After spending some time with friends over Thanksgiving break, that bond is still strong. Though we don't talk nearly enough, we're all still the same people, and still great friends.

This whole process got me to thinking about now though. And the now is pretty excellent. I have a very close group of friends here that are my brothers beyond genetics. I'm going to college, meeting new people, and running. There was a point that the main character in the book made about how he would immediately reminisce, tell himself to remember this because it won't get any better, and it won't last forever. That's absolutely true, this won't last. One day I'll be away from all these close connections I've made, not able to run like I can now, and have a life filled with serious obligations.

It's a good idea to reminisce the great times you're having right now, to try and appreciate them and remember them now, so you can still remember them much later on.

On a lighter note, Scrubs is back!
