You forget that he DID have children his age to play with, depending on how long Joseph and Mary stayed in Egypt until they moved back to the Bethlehem...it's unclear how long they stayed away, but I'm guessing it was quite awhile. At least, common sense would tell me to stay away for awhile if somebody was trying to kill me.

Also, Harod, in his old age, went crazy. The slaughtering of the children was one of the last terrible things he did in his rain of blood and terror over the Jews.

Granted, I agree with you. He DIDN'T look into the prophecy. But, well, he was too busy being crazy to do that.
