Well... today started out just like any other... uneventful.
At 10:45 this morning my dad got "the call" saying there was a heart. So we started on a wild hunt to get ahold of my mom and sister. My mom wasn't answering her cell phone or her office phone and my sisters school wouldn't let me take her out of school (I suppose we should be thankful for that.)
So I knew it was coming, and my thought was a holiday...though I'd assumed Christmas Eve. Apparently no one else in my family knew it was coming! My mom hadn't 'figured' it would come for a full year... my sister didn't realize it would really come at all... my dad, was still holding hope that his current one would work eventually. I knew it was coming. I honestly thought Christmas Eve.
So here I am... sitting in the den at my parents house, avoiding homework by playing "The Sims 2" (I'm way addicted!) and the kitchen phone rings. My dad says "blocked call, I don't feel like telemarketers today." So no one answers. Then his cell phone rings, but I continue clicking away, thinking nothing of it... until I hear "Pamy, Call me immediately." He sounded panicked. I figured it was my grandmother, she's living with my aunt and having 'issues' with it. (i.e. they hate each other.) So I rushed out to ask him. His reply... "I can't find your damn mother." Umm... ok... why would it be you're looking for her?? Then he said "They have a heart." *Jaw Hits the Floor*
So he explains that he has an hour to get to the hospital, they found a heart. But first we have to find my mom and sister. So my mom doesn't answer her cell phone... or her work phone, or the five pages I had the poor little girl at the front desk give. So I call the school to get my sister (she's 15) out of class and all they'll say is "We don't let sisters make those calls." So finally I yell "My father is on his way to the hospital for a f*(k!^g Heart Transplant, and I'll be there to pick up my sister in 10 minutes." My dad leaves to drive to my mom's office, and I leave for the high school. Sure enough, my sister is outside. (Countdown... 30 minutes down, 30 to go.) We get to the hospital and call my dad's cell phone, he's trying to convince the security gaurds at the clinic where my mom works to go find my mom *lol* So they finally find her (in a meeting of course) and they rush to the hospital.
This whole time, I'm not worried for my dad... I have no doubts that the surgery will be fine. The only thing I can think of is ... "Somebody lost their baby on the day before Thanksgiving."
So they start all the pre-op tests, make sure he's healthy enough to get the heart. Then they told us that 2 doctors from the hospital were flying to get the heart, it was in Oklahoma (or maybe Arkansas, it was such a blur!) and that they'd start the surgery around 6 or 7 that night. Well, "harvesting" the heart took longer than they thought, and it was 8:30pm before the plane even landed at the hospital. About 5 minutes later my sister saw two doctors running down the hall with the cooler and machine that kept the heart!!!
So by 10:30 we recieved word that all was well, and he'd come through fine!!! At 1:45am my sister, mom and I got to walk back to ICU and see him through the windows!!!!
So here I am... 2:30 am on Thanksgiving, getting ready to sleep for 5 minutes before I go back to the hospital *lol*
Please keep us in your prayers.
